What I wanted to learn more about...

At the beginning of the semester, I indicated that there was not one specific topic that I wished to go into depth about, but rather that I would like to gain a more broad knowledge of how the environment affects our health as a whole.  Over the course of the semester, I have certainly gained an abundance of knowledge about matters in the environment can harm us, as humans.  I gained a better understanding of the term "Global Environmental Health" and the Kyoto Agreement.  To be honest...I had never even heard of the Kyoto Agreement prior to this class.  Now, can speak on the role the United States played in helping to write the Kyoto Agreement, as well as, the pros and cons of the United States' refusal to sign and participate in the agreement.  I had the opportunity to look into how a contaminated food supply can affect not just a family but a community as a whole.
While I gained knowledge about a many subjects pertaining to Environmental health, I did focus my chosen topics on Cholera and the effects of Cholera around the world.  I was already aware of how Cholera was spread, but was unaware of other specifics.  I had no clue prior to research that many countries do use an approved Cholera vaccine, the United States recommends the vaccine for some people traveling abroad, but the vaccine is not even available here in the US.  According to statistics, the only known cases of Cholera in the US are imported cases.

Cholera 101

Below, you will find a link to a Cholera fact sheet I have created.  The fact sheet will give you very basic information about the topic.

Below, you will find a link to a Cholera tri-fold brochure I have created.  The brochure will give you very basic information about the topic.

Rachel Carson- Silent Spring

Rachel Carson played a massive role in the field of environmental health.  With Carson’s book, Silent Spring, she exposed the government’s spray practices concerning DDT and other pesticides.  She faced extreme opposition from the government and chemical companies, but ultimately ignited the reversal in national pesticide policies.  Her research exposed the possible environmental effects and human health effects (cancer) associated with the use of synthetic pesticides.  She claimed the chemical industry was knowingly spreading false information regarding pesticides, and government officials were accepting their claims without question.  Upon completion of her research, the government officials eventually ban the use of DDT and other pesticides nationwide.  Her work also inspired the establishment of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Maps

Choropleth Map

Choropleth maps are shaded or patterned according to measurement being displayed within that region. The map above uses different shades of red and pink to indicate the average percentage of both deaths among children under the age of 5 due to HIV/AIDS and the population undernourished between 2004 and 2006, across Africa.

Dot Density Map

Dot density maps use small dots to represent a specific portion of the population.  The map above reflects the distribution of poor individuals outside of metro or large cities, in 2004.  Each dot represents 200 people.  You will notice that near larger cities (Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, etc.) there are no dots, but in areas outside of those cities, especially east of the Mississippi River, there are greater concentrations of blue dots or greater populations of poor individuals.

Proportional Symbol Map

Proportional symbol maps use symbols of different sizes to represent data/statistics pertinent to different areas.  The map above is a display of the homeless population, by state, in 2009.  Unlike the dot density map, this particular map reflects greater concentrations of homeless people in states where major cities are located (New York-New York City, Florida-Miami, California-Los Angeles, San Fransico, San Diego, etc.)  The larger circles represent a greater homeless population, in that state.

Topographic Map

Topographic maps display both natural and man-made features.  Through the use of contour lines, these maps display changes in elevation of a particular area.  This topographic map shows the elevation changes of Stone Mountain and the area immediately surround the landmark.  You will notice, at the location of the mountain, there are a greater concentration of contour lines as you make your way to the center or top of the mountain.

Environmental Sensitivity Index Map

Environmental Sensitivity Index maps provide a concise summary of areas that would be directly and most affect, in the event of an oil spill.  The above map shows the coast line of Kenya, located at its south east border.  According to the map and legend, the waders would be in the most danger, should an oil spill take place.

Recife to Olinda

    Recife to Olinda
Above, you will see an image, from Google Earth, with two thumbnails.  The most southern thumbnail is over a beautiful city in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil called Recife.  I'm drawn to this particular city because I resided here for a few months to play soccer, for a professional women's soccer club.  The city is absolutely amazing.  Alot of the residents call New York City on the beach.  Having traveled to both NYC and Recife, I would have to agree with that statement.  While I do LOVE the Big Apple, I must say Recife tops it by far!!  If you follow both red paths heading North, you will eventually run into the breath-taking, historical city of Olinda.  These two cities are a perfect display of the diversity that exists throughout Brazil.  When in route between cities, one can see the many sides to the country.  Both paths will take you through cities, country sides, mountains, and hills.

     Issues with GoogleEarth and Blogspot
Completely new to blogging I have not yet run into too many issues.  However, I realize my posts lack a big of creativity!  GoogleEarth was a COMPLETELY different story.  After viewing many YouTube videos I finally got a better understanding for the program and have been able to successfully complete the assignment.
